The product itself would likely be 4or5/5 but Samsung massively dropped the ball with the firmware and response. The drives in the PRO lineup (980 and 990 specifically) are now well known for being affected by faulty firmware that rapidly degrades the drives lifespan in use.

This was fixed with a firmware update in February, however, not only was the communication on the matter AFTER being called out by multiple sources but there is also the aftermath to consider. Samsung hasn't issued official recalls. This means that most of the 990Ps in retail stores are loaded with the old firmware. While tech enthusiasts right now maybe aware of this and know that the first thing they should do after loading up the drive is a firmware update what about next year, couple years down the line if they buy this from sale?

Right now Samsung seems to be liberally issuing reclamations, likely under public pressure. However, when your drive that could have lasted 8-10 years fails at around 5 because will they care? of course not.

In vacuum it is still extremely performant drive from reputable manufacturer. A little on the more premium side on price/perf but not too bad. But I can't really ignore how big of a debacle the firmware is. And I loathe to think about how many non-technical people who bought a pre-built are going to get burned for this because they won't know their drive is burning itself nonstop :/
